I have never felt so frightened and ripped off and angry and ill. We hated every second our the 2 week scam we endured.

I don’t know, Italians with beards and normal clothes, we walked a lot in the city, took local bus and metro, no issue. No idea. We went 3 times to the pyramids and paid in cash, we said a firm no to the camel people, and no issue. I hope soon to go to Awsan and Dahab

We’ll be lying if we said some of the things you experienced weren’t true. I grew up in Egypt and left for work at the age of 30. When people ask me about visiting Egypt, I tell them it’s a love hate relationship. It’s very rewarding to see a lot of the places like the Pyramids, but there is a great deal of frustration that goes along with it, unfortunately. However, your experience can vary wildly. You’ll either fall in love, or you’ll hate it and curse every single Egyptian you meet from that point on. I constantly meet people from all over the world that decided to live somewhere in Egypt, and I’ve met people who just want to get the hell out as fast as possible.

I also strongly encourage people to get those big tourist attractions out of the way as soon as possible (Cairo, Luxor, Aswan) and then make room for visiting the coast where it’s far less stressful and the people are a lot more mellow. I would strongly encourage people to visit the Red Sea, skipping Sharm el Sheikh. Taba, Nuweiba, and Dahab are all great to wind down and relax. Also much further south at Marsa Allam or as far as Hamata (close to the border with Sudan) are really nice places. For scuba divers, the Red Sea is a dream.

I still love it, and I would strongly encourage people not to be deterred by other people’s negative experiences. I agree, I think it’s good to go in knowing some of the bad things highlighted here exist, but I honestly don’t think it’s as bad as how it seems when you’re reading it here.

I’ve been in Egypt for the last three weeks and I’m having a completely different experience, especially concerning the safety. You can walk enywhere at anythime of the night or day and never feel that tension. You can leave your cell phone on your table and no one will grab it. I’ve been to all kinds of neighbourhoods of Cairo, even the poorest, and it was chill. If you can get past the pushy tourist attraction sellers of camel rides and such, avoid basic travellers “scams” , learn a few words of arabic, you will find that Egyptians are very proud, welcoming and helping, they want you to like your stay. At the same time, I get it.. like the meme
goes “Egypt is not for begginers”, it’s not an easy country, but what in Disneyland were you expecting?

Some one did that for a reason, when suporting islamic rule there.
The modern warfare, no need for weapons and destruction. And no country to blame.
Check any country`s history – its what always happends. Ones those things are inside, the hell begins.

You talk about the poverty but you are upset about being “scammed” 50 Egyptian Pounds. 1USD.

I agree entirely with your take on this too. A completely absurd article that reeks of close mindedness, entitlement and a sheltered mindset. The most ridiculous thing I have ever read about Egypt.
