Great post. I am an Egyptian raised in New Jersey In the US. The only women who cover their hair are the Muslims. I am a Christian about 10% of the population is Christian. If anyone feels more comfortable wearing a head cover that’s up to the person. I just wanted to clarify a little. I hope you enjoyed your vacation. I suggest you go to Sharm El Sheikh! I liked the article; after seeing the picture of you with the scarf on your head, I wonder if people were just curious. You and your husband don’t look Egyptian and a good chunk of your hair was showing and you were wearing short sleeves (which wouldn’t meet hijab requirements, so they were probably wondering wear you were from and why you were dressed that way.) It could also be the “spotlight effect” of you dressing much differently than you normally do and feel like all eyes are on you. This happened to me when I started wearing hijab, but a few years later and I realized that was the Muslim version of thinking everyone on middle school instantly is staring at your pimple 24/7 no matter who you talk to. In reality, most people don’t care or notice. I hope you enjoyed your trip, I hope I can go soon inshallah

In reply to Anonymous. Thanks so much for sharing your experience! My husband and I were planning to travel there in 2024 without a travel agency, but now, IF we end up going it will be with a an agency that a friend had recommended (but I had disregarded the possibility of traveling this way).

Great post but I think you’re exaggerating. Egyptians are very welcoming and used to tourists. I find it difficult to believe you were judged based on your outfits. For sure you can’t go to a mosque uncovered etc but I think it’s okay elsewhere, especially in Cairo.

Thank you for recommendations regarding what to pack for women for trip to Egypt. My husband and I are planning to visit late September to early October of this year, and have guided tour through the duration of our 14 day itinerary. We are spending 3 extra days in Cairo to book side trips or just unwind. I read your comment regarding your frustration and not being prepared well for Cairo. Is this mostly the locals staring at you or are there other concerns that I should be aware of ?
Of course I am in my mid-60’s and have 2 children around your age.
Maybe an older female may not be as attractive as a younger female? Please advise.

Hey Antonina, happened to chance upon your blog while looking for outfit tips for Egypt as I will be visiting in January. Just wanted to say thanks for providing so much detailed information!

Also look forward to hearing more about your honest thoughts on Egypt! I’ve heard it’s been quite a hit and miss there.
